"I know you are probably thinking... what else can I do to help animals in need? I felt the same way! That's why Dad and I decided to write this book and donate the proceeds to The Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and other animal shelters. Even though you might be "just a kid" - you can help make a difference in the life of an animal that needs help. The first thing you can do is find an animal shelter near you that you want to help. You can look in the Yellow Pages under "Animal Shelter" or do a search on the Internet. Of course, you will want to ask your Mom or Dad or another adult you trust to help you. Most animal shelters have a "wish list". After you find a shelter, call them and ask to speak to the Volunteer Coordinator. Tell him or her that you want to help. Ask what types of supplies they need and where you can drop them off. Most shelters need leases, food, blankets and other items for animals. Once you have your list, decide how you will gather the items. For example, you might call your family and friends and ask them to each donate one item on the list; or, you might organize a benefit for the animal shelter at your school - it can be as easy as making posters explaining what you need and where to drop them off. Just make sure you have permission first! And, just for buying my book, you are helping an animal in need somewhere. Thank you for that! If everyone does a little, we can all help a lot." |
